The common scenario is that you return from a long day of work and decide to unwind by preparing a hot bath, but you can enjoy a bath even after a good day of work. The fact is a bath is a great way to treat yourself. But what happens if your bathtub’s plug is not blocking the water? One thing is for sure: it is going to get in the way of your bath. Fortunately, you are in luck. There are some quick fixes to block a bathtub drain without a plug. Try some of these household options but remember to stop by the hardware store to buy a replacement plug the next time you’re out.
Coffee Is A Lifesaver
Grab one of those single-serving coffee cups or small plastic medicine cup. A coffee pod like a Keurig cup or 15 mL medicine cup is usually just the right size to block the bathtub’s drain. Put either cup in the drain bottom first and pour some water to see if it holds. If the cup is only a little too small, then try wrapping a few rubber bands around it to thicken it and improve its seal.
Put A Lid on It!
If you make coffee the old-fashioned way or if you do not have a small plastic medicine cup, then try a flat jar lid. A plastic lid can work as well, so long as it is large enough to cover the drain. Place the lid over the drain and let the water run as you press down on the lid firmly. Once the water accumulates, the weight of the water should be able to keep the lid in place. It is therefore helpful to find a plastic lid that is flexible.
Hope You Have Got A Plastic Bag
There is more uses for a plastic bag than you might have thought. Grab a plastic bag or zip lock bag and toss a wet washcloth or small sponge into it. Squeeze the bag to let as much air out as you can without damaging the bag. Tie the bag, zip it closed, or use a rubber band to secure it. Stuff the bag in the drain hole and it should fit tight and snug. You can even just fill a sandwich bag with water or use the bag similar to how you used the lid in the previous section.
Or, Run Out for A Replacement Plug
Many hardware stores are open late, so quickly head to your local hardware store to buy a replacement plug. Remember to get the measurements of your drain hole so that you buy the right size!
Get A Drain Stopper Installed
As you may have learned, those plugs are easy to lose. If you want a long-lasting solution, then consider calling Mr. Rooter Plumbing to request an urgent dispatch or schedule an appointment to have a drain stopper installed. This way you will not have to worry about creating makeshift plugs in the future.
