When it comes to removing your shower drain cover, you’ll want to make sure you have either paper towels or cleaning clothes nearby – things can build up in your shower drain, and you’ll want to clean it up as you go. Here are the 5 common types of drain covers and how you can remove them each:

  • Screw-in

To start, you’ll want to unscrew the flat or slightly concaved strainer. For this, you’ll need a flat or Phillips head screwdriver. Simply use your screwdriver to remove to shower drain cover and remove it.

  • Push/Pull

For this kind of drain cover, you’ll want to hold the stopper in place and unscrew the top knob. For this, you will need pliers, a rag, or a rubber gripper to prevent from injury or scratching. Unscrew the brass insert with a flathead screwdriver, then lift the stopper.

  • Lift and Turn

This kind of drain cover requires you to lift it and look for the screws. If you don’t find any, you can turn it counterclockwise to remove it. If you see the screw, you’ll want to use an Allen wrench to loosen the stopper and remove it.

  • Pop-up covers
