How to Check Toilets for Leaks

How to Check Toilets for Leaks

Your toilet keeps your home or business clean, so it is only reasonable that you stay on top of its maintenance. One of the most common problems with toilets is leakage. These can be bothersome and even cost you in water bills. There are an unfortunate number of places that your toilet can leak but Mr. Rooter Plumbing is here to help you detect and resolve some common leaks. If you are worried about a toilet leak, then read through this article. You can also call Mr. Rooter Plumbing to have a certified plumber quickly take care of that leak.

Finding the Leak

We have four easy steps that should help you locate the leak:

  •  Remove the lid of the toilet tank and carefully place it on the floor nearby.
  • -    Check the water level in the tank. There is usually a line that shows the optimal water level and will likely be labeled as “water line” or something similar.
  • -    Grab a bottle of food coloring and place about 20 drops into the water in the toilet tank. The color of the water in the tank should visibly change. Next, wait about 30 minutes.
  • -    Return to check the color of the water in the toilet bowl after about 30 minutes. If the food coloring has made its way into the toilet bowl, then you might have a flapper leak or a crack in the overflow tube.

Some Quick Troubleshooting

Minor toilet leaks can be resolved on your own. Try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Check the Flapper: Your flapper should create a proper seal to prevent water from flowing into the toilet bowl. A small, steady stream of water flowing into the toilet bowl is a strong sign of a faulty flapper.
  • Tighten the Bolts: If the leak is coming from the base of the toilet, then try tightening the bolts. This might restore the seal.
  • Replace the Wax Ring: If tightening the tee bolts does not resolve the leak at your toilet’s base, then you might have to replace the wax ring. This procedure can be tricky. You may want to call a professional to take care of it.
