Why Am I Running Out of Hot Water?

Why Am I Running Out of Hot Water?

Have you been noticing that you’re running out of hot water lately? No one likes to be taking a nice warm shower and then all of sudden the water goes cold. There are so many different reasons why you are running out of hot water in your home, but if you’re not an expert, you won’t know what that exact reason is and how you can fix it.
The reasons you’re running out of hot water could be minor issues such as your pipes are too small, you may not have it set up correctly, or you could have an issue with cartridges. If those aren’t it, the serious could be much bigger and more serious – pipe buildup or corrosion, broken tubes, or pipe leaks. These are all issues that you should get looked at by the local plumbers at Mr. Rooter, and not try to do a little DIY fix.
There are some things you can look at in regards to your hot water issue that will help you determine where exactly your issue is. Below, we are going to discuss the most common issues people have with their water temperature and what we recommend you do to help resolve your issue.

The most common hot water issues and how to fix them:

  1. You get spurts of hot and cold water - If you notice your water shoots out cold water one second, and then hot water the next, you may have an issue with buildup and corrosion. This typically happens in older homes that have older pipes. The buildup or corrosion decreases the space the water has to push through, causing it to change the temperature quickly. To fix this, you can try using a drain-clearing liquid such as Drano and see if that helps. This liquid helps to break up any build-up your drains may have. If this doesn’t help your issue, you most likely have too much buildup and you’ll need to call the professional plumbers at Mr. Rooter to replace your pipes.
  2. You run out of hot water quickly - Another common issue is that you have hot water in your shower but not for long. Your hot water heater tank has a top heating system and a bottom heating system. If you notice you run out of hot water quickly, then your bottom heating element probably isn’t working properly.  To fix this issue, there really is no other way to fix it but to replace your hot water heating tank’s bottom system. Give Mr. Rooter a call and we’ll come to do the dirty work for you!
  3. You never get really hot water - If you notice your water temperature stays at room temperature and never gets scorching hot, you most likely have a broken heater dip tube. When this happens, your hot and cold water mix instead of coming from separate places giving you only lukewarm water.

If this is the case for you, give us a call today and we will be glad to come over and replace your dip tube – it won’t take us long, and it won’t cost you much!
